Vayeshev is the 9th of 54 segments of instruction and it means "And He dwelt," which is the 1st words of this Portion. All other portions follow the same naming convention; the 1st word of each segment is its name. In some weeks of select years, certain portions are doubled up for study according to a schedule that has been kept for thousands of years.
